An AI NFT game puts AI behind a character you own on chain. Here is what the term covers, the three kinds that exist, and how Ethernal Cubs will use it.

An AI NFT game is a game where the characters or items are NFTs you own, and artificial intelligence does something inside the game: it draws the art, it runs the opponents, or it gives your character a mind you can talk to. The term is used loosely, so the first job is to work out which of those three a project actually means.
This guide explains all three, with sources you can check, and then says plainly which one Ethernal Cubs is building and when it will arrive. Spoiler: the AI companion in our game is coming soon, it is not switched on at mint, and we would rather you knew that before you read any further.
Most projects that call themselves an AI NFT game are the first kind. The interesting ones are the second and third, and the third is the hardest to do honestly, because the AI has to belong to the token rather than to a server that could go dark.
The cheapest meaning of the phrase. A studio uses an image model to produce the artwork, or a language model to write names and backstories, and then mints the results. Once minted, nothing about the NFT is intelligent. It is a picture, like any other picture.
There is nothing wrong with this, but it is not a game. If the whole pitch is that the art was generated, ask what you will do with it on day two. Our own view of why that goes quiet is in the post on why NFTs get boring, which you can read at /blog/why-nfts-get-boring.
Here the AI powers something you play against or alongside: an adviser that answers questions, a shopkeeper who remembers you, an opponent that adapts. This is where mainstream games are moving. NVIDIA's ACE page (checked on 18 October 2026) describes a toolkit of speech, language and facial animation models for characters that hold conversations, and lists an AI adviser in Total War: PHARAOH and work with KRAFTON on inZOI among its users.
In an NFT game this kind of AI changes what the token can do, not what it is. Your sword is still a token in your wallet. The AI is the thing you swing it at. If the studio switches the servers off, you keep the sword and lose the enemy, which is the same bargain as any online game.
The third kind puts the intelligence in the token. The character has a personality, a memory of what you have said to it, and abilities that travel with it when it is sold. Ethereum developers have been working on exactly this: ERC-7857, AI Agents NFT with Private Metadata, created on 2 January 2025, defines an NFT whose private data, such as the agent's model, memory and character definition, stays encrypted but is re-encrypted for the new owner on transfer, so a buyer receives the whole agent and not just a picture of it.
That is the hard problem in one sentence. A chatbot with an NFT profile picture is easy. A character whose memory and personality are genuinely yours, and which still works for the next owner, takes real design. Anyone promising it should be able to tell you where the memory lives and what happens to it when the token moves.
Talking to a character is a feature. A game needs more than that, and the AI should earn its place in it. Four things separate the two:
Ethernal Cubs is the third kind, built on top of the first principle in the list above: you build the character before it gets a mind.
What you mint on Thursday 29 October 2026 at 14:00 UTC is a sealed Orb, not a finished Cub. Orbs come in five tiers by name, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Diamond and Sapphire, and the tier stays hidden until you open it. Opening the Orb gives you parts, and you assemble a Cub of your own from them, swapping pieces whenever you like. The full flow is on our how to play page at /how-to-play.
Then the AI layer arrives. Every Cub will become an AI companion whose personality will be drawn from the parts it is built from, so a Cub assembled from quiet, scholarly pieces will not talk like one built for the arena. Power Orbs, which are upgrades for a finished Cub and a different thing from the sealed Orb you mint, will extend what your companion can do across five areas: memory, creativity, knowledge, reasoning and vision. Longer conversational memory, creative writing, looking things up and understanding an image you show it are the kinds of abilities we are building toward.
To be exact about timing: the AI companion is coming soon and will not be live on mint day. Mint day is about the Orb and the parts. The companion follows once the Cubs exist to give it a personality, and we will publish how it works, where the memory lives and what it costs to use before anyone is asked to rely on it.

The whitelist is live now at ethernalcubs.ai, and the mint day checklist at /blog/ethernal-cubs-mint-date walks through the wallet setup.
Including ours. If a project cannot answer these, treat the AI as a label rather than a feature.
Our answers for Ethernal Cubs will be published with the companion itself. Until then, the honest state is: the builder and the game come first, the companion is on the way, and nothing about it is being sold to you today.
Yes, in the third sense above: a character you build from parts you own, which will become an AI companion you can talk to. The AI layer is coming soon and is not live at mint. The parts, the Orbs and the game come first.
No. You will mint an Orb, open it, and build a Cub. When the companion arrives you will talk to it in plain language, the way you would message a friend. There is no model to train and nothing to configure.
We do not make claims about value, and you should be wary of anyone who does. What the AI changes is what you can do with your Cub. Value is decided by people, not by features.
Robinhood Chain, an Ethereum Layer 2 built on Arbitrum with chain ID 4663, which launched on 1 July 2026. Any standard Ethereum wallet such as MetaMask works once the network is added. Gas is paid in ETH and usually costs around a cent for a mint.
